I have a desktop computer purchased in 2002 with a CPU of 1.3G, a 40G hard disk (Seagate), and 512M of memory (upgraded now). Because there is broadband at home, I often sing at night. Not long ago, after downloading a few small programs, I shut down normally. When I started up again for the second time, it showed that the hard disk could not be detected. The power-on self-test time was relatively long. When entering CMOS and setting to AUTO, it showed "DEFECT HARD DRIVE". After exiting and restarting, the hard disk could not be detected. When using the A disk to boot, the hard disk must be set to NONE, otherwise the hard disk light is always on and the system cannot be booted. It also cannot be booted on other computers.

This hard disk has only been formatted twice, and there has never been any bad track phenomenon, and now the rotation is also normal.

According to preliminary analysis, it is a virus that has occupied the boot sector. After booting with DOS, DEBUG was used to rewrite the boot sector. After detecting a good hard disk, the bad hard disk was hot-swapped, but when writing and executing, it showed "ERROR" and could not be rewritten.

Because the CMOS could not detect the hard disk, I have tried FDISK, PM, KV3000, and Seagate special low-level format, all of which ended in failure because the hard disk could not be detected.

Using an instrument to measure, the voltage of the circuit on the outer surface of the hard disk is all normal, with no abnormal phenomena.

Who told you to hot-swap? You're quite bold (hehe). The IDE interface generally shouldn't be hot-swapped. If it's like the method you mentioned, you could just write the information of the normal hard drive to a floppy disk, then power off and replace the hard drive, and then write it to the hard drive.

If the BIOS can't detect it, it's either a problem with the BIOS or a problem with the hard drive hardware, and nothing else needs to be discussed. But since your BIOS can recognize other hard drives, it's less likely to be broken.

This hard drive of yours is probably physically damaged. Go to a repair shop.

Since you've tried other machines and it still doesn't work, why not just throw it away, or take it apart and use the disk as a mirror? It's said that the disk of a hard drive is smoother than any mirror.

Generally, if it's not a mechanical failure, it can still be repaired. If the BIOS can't find the hard drive, I estimate that the problem is with the circuit board of your hard drive. If the hard drive has mechanical failures like the motor or spindle, generally it can still be recognized by the BIOS.

First, a virus cannot make the BIOS unable to detect the hard disk.
Second, if the hard disk light is always on, it means the hard disk itself is faulty. Go and get it repaired quickly.
P.S. If you have enabled HDD S.M.A.R.T, it might show where the problem is.

I also had this situation. The hard disk CMOS couldn't be detected.
My solution: precisely is to hot-swap vigorously until it appears :). Definitely a personal experience. IBM 2G hard disk (the data cable doesn't move, hot-swap the hard disk power supply). After hearing the hard disk rotate relatively evenly and steadily, restart the PC. If it doesn't work, continue.

(Death method: reverse connect +5v and +12v. A damn garbage power supply. The slot has +5 and +12 reversed)
Anyway, not hot-swapping is also to be discarded. It's easier to do this kind of thing when drunk :).
This was a tragic event when connecting to a friend's computer to copy data one year later. In the future, it's best to measure the voltage when connecting accessories to a杂牌 power supply.

Previously, my machine also had the phenomenon that the CMOS couldn't detect the hard disk. But the solution I used is:

1) Turn off Windows, turn off the machine power supply

2) Find the cyl, heads, sect data marked on the hard disk; check whether the hard disk is connected to IDE1 (Primary first hard disk) or IDE2 (Secondary second), and whether it is Master (master disk) or Slave (slave disk)

3) Power on, enter CMOS setup, find the corresponding hard disk, set the Manual mode, and enter in CHS:
cylinders:
heads:
sectors:
Press F10, press Enter

4) Restart

This is how I succeeded. You can definitely give it a try. This is a safe method, don't worry.

Judging from the phenomenon you described, it is possible that a logic lock has been infected.

It should not be a configuration issue. This happened when I was operating a Chinese system in pure DOS with a virtual floppy disk. After a crash, I pressed the Reset key. Could it be that the very current shock caused the loss of CMOS data? Please let the moderator explain!

I have a 20G WD hard drive. After a normal disassembly, it can't be recognized! Manual recognition doesn't work either!
When powered on, I hear a short power-on sound from the hard drive, and then it doesn't move!

Find a good hard drive. See if the BIOS can detect it. If it can be detected, then test your original hard drive. If it still can't be detected, then your hard drive is bad. Replace it.
