What I need from a boot disk is just to be able to boot WINxp from the CD and handle these 3 things: NTFS partitions and formatting. I wonder if it can fit on one floppy?

XP can also be installed under DOS. Under DOS, enter the I386 folder of the WINXP setup files, and use the WINNT command to install. You can first copy I386 to the hard drive, then load SMARTDRV before installing to speed it up. That's how I used to do it.

A boot disk made with the My Bootdisk tool can boot XP from a single floppy

Create an xp boot disk set, 4 floppies total (for the method, look on Microsoft's homepage). Delete all the files on the first floppy, then copy the xp boot files from your current system onto that disk. Be careful not to format it, you need that disk's boot sector.
Then try booting with this disk.
