I think you need to grasp some basic concepts:
Disk, including sectors, tracks, clusters, partition tables, file allocation tables, etc.; you can learn them together with using NDD and the like.
Directories and files, including the main filename, extension, attributes; you can learn them together with using PCTOOLS and related commands.
Memory, concepts like UMB, XMS, EMS, etc.; basically learn them together with using MI
Once you learn these concepts, you'll know DOS too.

For beginners, starting right away with disk structure and the like is not good, it's too dull. You should first learn practical use, such as common operations, utility software, and so on. Disk structure should be left for the end. After all, you have to consider what most people can absorb.

1. I suggest making a DOS boot disk under 98
2. If you only want to use DOS to solve practical problems, I suggest looking at Hongen's DOS tutorial online, or spending more time browsing DOS Home;
3. If you want to become a DOS expert, then just mastering commands is far from enough. You also need to study disks, memory, system configuration, batch files, partitions, etc.
