You need to change the way EMM386 is loaded. Try the following one by one:
1: do not load EMM386
2: EMM386 NOEMS
3: EMM386 RAM
1: do not load EMM386
2: EMM386 NOEMS
3: EMM386 RAM

If it still doesn't work... try a Virtual PC environment... good support for VESA...

I haven't played this game myself, but I do know that some old DOS games don't support newer machines very well, because the CPU clock speed is too high. Please try lowering the speed and then try again.

I just downloaded the game and tested it on my system (a real computer, P200MHz CPU, 160MB RAM), and found this:
Under MS-DOS 7.10, MS-DOS 6.22, FreeDOS, and the DOS window in Windows ME, this game would not run, and the crash behavior was the same in all cases; the only DOS that could run this game properly was ROM-DOS 7.10. Of course, the situation may be different on older machines (not tested yet).
