Could it be a virus? It may be because the patch for the RPC DCOM vulnerability in Microsoft's security bulletin MS03-026 was not installed, and you were attacked by a virus exploiting that vulnerability, which caused this error. Some win2000 installation CDs have corrupted files. Try buying another installation CD and reinstalling win2000; maybe that will solve the problem. I also solved a similar problem this way.

If you're using a pirated 2000 and you're also going online, that means you were hit by Blaster. Go online and look for the patch!
