I want to install two operating systems on my computer. I've always been using WIN98SE, and now I want to install XP as well, but there are too many files on my hard disk, and I don't want to delete the existing partitions. At the same time, I have never used PartitionMagic, so I want to ask everyone: is it possible to use a virtual image to create a hard disk partition within the same partition and install two operating systems? How should it be done? Thanks!

In WINDOWS 98 SE you can directly install the WIN XP system. You just need to install XP into another directory different from the 98 system files during setup. For details, see the related posts in the forum.

Within the same partition, first install 98, then install XP (new path such as c:\winxp\), modify the boot.ini file (as below), then restart and that's it!

timeout=30
default=C:\

C:\="Microsoft Windows"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

The following is quoted from wk9568's post on 2004-2-3 19:56:59:
Within the same partition, first install 98, then install XP (new path such as c:\winxp\), modify the boot.ini file (as below), then restart and that's it!

timeout=30
default=C:\

C:\="Microsoft Windows"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

I opened this one in my own system:

timeout=3
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Please tell me the main differences. Thanks!

Could someone annotate the method of modifying boot.ini in Chinese?
