I heard that PC-DOS 7.1 (the latest version of PC-DOS) can support FAT32 partitions and large hard disks, so I finally found and downloaded its boot disk online just now. Sure enough, it can support FAT32 partitions (very happy). Right now I'm posting this message from under PC-DOS 7.1 using the Lynx browser. It seems PC-DOS 7.1 really is quite good, and its compatibility with MS-DOS is beyond question.

It has the same version number as MS-DOS 7.10 and ROM-DOS 7.10, so there won't be any version-number problems. Compared with MS-DOS 7.10, it has a very big advantage, namely that the system boot files are very small. For example, the sizes of the three files IBMBIO.COM, IBMDOS.COM, and COMMAND.COM are 43K, 42K, and 52K respectively, only 137K in total, yet it supports FAT12/16/32 partitions all the same. Its advantages for making a boot disk are very obvious.

I just made it into a boot disk and uploaded it here. Download address:

There are no files in RDOS710。IMG for making a boot disk?

Then of course, like romdos, it can also boot past the logical lock, right!

It seems there are already quite a few DOSes now that can support FAT32 partitions, so saying “DOS does not support FAT32” is completely wrong. DOSes that support FAT32 include:

MS-DOS 7.1/8.0
PC-DOS 7.1
ROM-DOS 7.1
DR-DOS 7.05
FreeDOS
RxDOS
PTS-DOS 2000
There may be others as well.

Where can these DOSes be downloaded? I especially want to try them all.

minisheep: Yes, I have already proved through testing that, like ROM-DOS, it is not affected by the “logical lock.”

nre: Use HD-COPY to extract the IMG file to a floppy disk and that makes it into a boot disk.

This site also has a download for the PDOS-7.1 boot disk:

Why is it that PDOS7.1 doesn't have sys.com, format.com, and the like? Can someone help find them? Without them there's no way to make the hard disk boot.

lydong: I looked at the PC-DOS 7.1 boot disk you mentioned, but found that it is not the same version as my PC-DOS 7.1. After testing, the PC-DOS 7.1 you mentioned unexpectedly could not recognize my FAT16 E: drive (“Invalid media”), while my PC-DOS 7.1 can recognize it normally.

wengier: Then do you have the sys.com file for PC-DOS7.1? Could you upload it?

I don't have the SYS command from PC-DOS 7.1 either. Actually, the SYS command from PC-DOS 2000 can also be used.

I tried this method. When executing PCDOS7.01's SYS.COM, it gives the prompt "Incorrect DOS version".

Then try using commands like SETVER to set the version number.
