Today I got a customer. He brought in a laptop and wanted the computer installed. I took a look and it was a Japanese model. It had Japanese XP and Traditional Chinese XP installed by default, and he wanted Simplified Chinese XP. But his laptop had no floppy drive, didn't support booting from USB, and only had an external USB CD-ROM drive.
At first I directly copied XP to drive D (it only had drives C and D). During installation it said it couldn't verify the correct serial number. So I went back to DOS mode to install it, but after copying just a few files it stopped. I suspected it was a problem with the previously installed system, so I figured I might as well format it and repartition it. But that was the start of my nightmare...
After formatting, I downloaded an MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk, wanting to load a USB drive under DOS, but no matter what I did it wouldn't detect it. I tried several brands of USB drives and it was the same. Later I downloaded several USB driver files myself from the Internet and made one on my own. At first it managed to detect the Samsung USB drive, and I was overjoyed. I hurriedly copied the Win98 installation files into it, planning to install Win98 first and then WinXP. Who knew that after copying was done, when I ran setup, there was no response. I checked the number and size of the files and they were all correct. How could this happen?
With no other choice, I had to try copying the Win98 files into it again, but.... then the boot disk from just now reported a problem with command, and it would never detect the USB drive again. No matter how I swapped things around and tried, it still wouldn't work. I've already deleted the customer's system .... and the result....
