Not only that, it also switches the CPU into protected mode, and provides VCPI memory and so on. But in this example, providing EMS memory is the main thing.

Memory, for example:

EMS = Expanded Memory Specification
XMS = Extended Memory Specification
VCPI = Virtual Control Program Interface
DPMI = DOS Protected Memory Interface
DPMS = DOS Protected Memory Services
UMB = Upper Memory Block
HMA = High Memory Area
etc...
