I suggest you use a floppy disk to boot and drive the U disk, then install XP via DOS. Because only by installing via DOS will XP achieve automatic copying and complete the boot at once. After that, you can complete the subsequent installation tasks without the U disk.
That is, boot into DOS by using a floppy disk to drive the U disk, execute winnt.exe once, and then the only thing you need to do is wait. When the system restarts, you can remove the U disk and the floppy disk.
This may require making an automatic answer file, probably called unattend.txt and other similar files.
