My machine doesn't have a floppy drive. Can I use a USB flash drive to boot and load the driver for a USB external hard drive? I tried the floppy-boot-based one from the forum, and it doesn't seem to work. In the end it always dies at not being able to find command.com, but that file is obviously supposed to be in the root directory of drive C: (that is, the USB flash drive). Could it be that loading the driver messes up the USB flash drive?

If there's no floppy drive, you can boot from the CD-ROM drive, right?
Whether a USB flash drive can boot depends on whether your motherboard supports it!

My machine can boot from a USB flash drive. What I mean is: is it possible to boot from a USB flash drive and at the same time load the driver for my USB external hard drive (not the USB flash drive)?
