Now I want to return to the world of DOS again,
but it feels like today's world is very different from 1994.
There are many DOS publishers,
and what are the latest versions of each popular distribution?
For example, MS-DOS, PC-DOS, DR-DOS.
Did MS stop making standalone DOS releases at DOS 6.22?
Is the latest version of IBM's PC-DOS 2000 or 7.1?
On the official website, DR-DOS can only be found up to version 7.03, so why is there a 7.05 in the download section?
I'm planning to buy an old machine specifically to run DOS. Do I need a Pentium or a 486?

Hoping one of the experts can answer!

The latest full version of MS-DOS is 7.10 (downloads are all over the forum), and MS-DOS 8.0 does not have a true standalone full version.

The latest full version of PC-DOS is 7.01 (2000), while PC-DOS 7.1 only has a boot disk, not a full version.

The latest full version of DR-DOS is 7.03, while DR-DOS 7.05 only has a boot disk, not a full version.

As for running DOS, of course the newer the computer the better; 586 or above is best. A 486 can work, but...

The newer the computer, the better?
Because I feel DOS won't support the latest devices now,
so it seems to me that anything above Pentium class would be a waste.
Then how much RAM would be more suitable? I feel like 32MB should already count as a huge amount! I've always been rather doubtful about DOS memory management.

Thanks, expert. I downloaded DOS 7.10 and DR-DOS 7.03.
I want to collect a few more versions of DOS, so I also need PC-DOS 2000.
But the PC-DOS 2000 on our webpage can't be downloaded (link invalid).
Could you EMAIL me a copy? (My mailbox is big enough. If you're willing to EMAIL it to me, I'll PM you my big mailbox address. Sorry, expert, but there's a lot of spam these days, so I have to be a bit careful.)

"It seems to me that anything above Pentium class would be a waste"—that feeling is naturally wrong. For example, when I play MP3 songs under DOS on a 486 or 586, the quality is rather poor. But on a PII-class computer, the effect is naturally much better. 128MB of RAM or more would be more suitable, and the hard drive should preferably be 10GB or above as well.
