I’ve basically read all the articles and replies on this forum, and they really are very good, so I also want to learn DOS well. Right now I first want to make a floppy drive driver disk myself, but this very first step has stumped me. extrat.exe seems to be able to extract only *.cab files, so I’ll have to ask you friends first. It would be best if you could give me a link. Thanks in advance!

MAKECAB can create CAB files, but generally people use ZIP, RAR, and other formats. CAB format is not used much on floppies.

CAB format was made by Microsoft. If you want to make CAB archives, besides MAKECAB, you can also use CAB200 and the like under WINDOWS.
If you don’t want to use CAB archives and EXTRAT, you can completely use RAR or AIN instead.

CAB creation software can be found in the compression software section of the Huajun homepage.
As for using RAR and AIN instead of CAB archives, you first need to master how to use them (all compression software is more or less the same), and then refer to the Autoexec.bat on the Win98 boot disk and modify it a bit to make it work.

Moderator, do you have a DOS version of MAKEXAB.EXE, and where can I download it?

If you have VFP or VB installed, you can find it in their installation directories. There is an ieak file on the IE5 installation disc; run ieak and you can find it there, though I don’t remember the exact method. makecab.exe itself is originally a DOS program.

I suggest everyone take a look at winace! Graphical interface! It can make cab! zip (create self-extracting and compressed files under dos and win) ace (create self-extracting and compressed files under dos and win), and also some compressed files under linux!

Do you mean the kind that runs under pure DOS (such as pure MS-DOS 7.10)? I haven’t come across one. MAKECAB is a DOS32 (that is, Win32 console) version.

Yes, because I only use MS-DOS V6.21, on a 386 machine. If there is a WIN3.X version, that would also do. Of course, since Microsoft has a DOS version of EXTRACT.EXE, I think there ought to be a DOS version of MAKECAB.EXE. Moderator, please enlighten me.
