I'm very confused about IP. There's dynamic IP and static IP, then public IP and LAN IP, and also things like dial-up Internet access...
I get online through Telecom's ADSL, and every time I only need to turn on the MODEM's power to get online.
I want to know whether mine counts as dial-up; how many kinds of Internet access Telecom provides; and whether I can set up an FTP?

Dynamic IP means it isn't fixed; generally it is temporarily assigned when you use a MODEN to dial up and get online.
Static IP, on the other hand, is fixed, like yours.
A public IP is unique, like an address; there is only one of it in the whole world.
A LAN IP is set by yourself. There can be multiple identical IPs in different LANs.
At present, the ones provided by the telecom bureau and also relatively common are ADSL, DDN, and ISDN.

What the brother in the post above said is right;
A dynamic IP is assigned automatically (its IP is different every time the machine is started), and a static IP is a designated IP;
This includes both LANs and the Internet.

Does that mean the IPs of users in an entire residential area who all get broadband together are dynamic IPs? -- It seems like with that kind of IP there's no way to set up your own FTP
What exactly does public IP mean? What are its advantages? What kinds of people and organizations can use a public IP? Does mine count as a public IP? If not, then can I get a public IP through Telecom or some other organization?
