Install Win98 first, then install MS-DOS 7.1. That way, Win98 becomes a GUI program under MS-DOS 7.1. To start Win98, just enter the WIN command under MS-DOS 7.1 at any time, or you can also have it run automatically in AUTOEXEC.BAT.

It seems that if I do it your way, WIN98 registry errors happen and it always restarts. Is there any way to solve this?

Did you not follow the prompts and instructions at all???

1: When the MS-DOS 7.1 installer asks whether to automatically set the Win9x path, you should choose Yes, not No!!!

2: If you mistakenly chose No above, then when entering Win98 from DOS, do not just type WIN directly. You should first enter the path where Win98 is located, then enter the WIN command! For example (assuming Win98 is under D:\WIN98):

D:
CD \WIN98
WIN

1. I didn't get any option to choose the WIN9X path?
2. I installed both systems on one drive
3. I used the CD version of DOS71 to install it. Could that cause this problem?

You only get that option the first time you install MS-DOS 7.1 when Win9x is already in the system. If you mistakenly chose NO, then the second time you install it, that option will no longer appear. But it doesn't matter, you can just enter Win98 using the second method I mentioned above.

By the way, after installing 98 first, when installing DOS 7.1, should I boot from this site's DOS CD, or use the 98 startup disk, or boot into the DOS mode that comes with 98?
Do I need to modify the system files?

When installing DOS 7.1, it is *best* to boot directly from that DOS installation disk (because it is a boot disk to begin with), and it is best not to boot from some other startup disk and then install it (although that also works).

Got it, I'll try it first. If it doesn't work, I'll ask you again. Thanks!

I have to ask for help again. Why is it that the dual-boot setup I made can't automatically rename the files, that is, change the system files to *.w40 or *.dos?
