Why is it that the MS-DOS 7.1 boot disk downloaded from this site cannot display the long filenames on the CD, but can still operate on them?
After the WinME boot disk loads DOSLFN, the long filenames on the CD still cannot be displayed and cannot be operated on either. There is no problem on the hard disk. For example, pwin98oem2 becomes pwin98oe on the CD, and on the ME disk, cd pwin98oe cannot enter it. Why is this? Please give me some advice |

Could it be related to the CD-ROM driver?
Or is it a problem with the CD itself? Although the 7.1 disk cannot display the full filename, it can still operate on it. For example, cd pwin98oe can enter it. Which files are making that work? Please advise |

I tried it too, and it is indeed like that. Also, Moderator W said it is not afraid of a logical lock, but I tested it and after the hard disk was locked it still could not boot.

wxyl: It's due to the CD-ROM driver + DOSLFN/MKLINK. Also, the compatibility of the WinME boot disk is far inferior to a DOS boot disk.
MLD: It's because the system files on the DOS boot disk are different. If you want it not to fear a logical lock, you should use the following DOS boot disk, not other DOS boot disks! http://newdos.yginfo.net/dosware/mdos71bk.zip |

The following is quoted from Wengier's post on 2003-11-29 9:55:08: Thanks! What I downloaded was this: http://newdos.yginfo.net/dosware/mdos71bd.zip The article says it is not afraid of a logical lock: ![]() |

MLD: No wonder. Actually, you should look at the description in the corresponding README.TXT file in the boot disk, and not the description on that webpage, because I rarely update the content on that website; at most I only update the date of the boot disk, so that is why this happened. But I have just corrected that passage.

Oh, thanks!
You said the OP's problem is due to "the CD-ROM driver + DOSLFN/MKLINK"—is there any specific way to solve it? |

Webmaster,
I downloaded the link you gave. The long-name files on the CD cannot be read, for example pwin98oem2--pwin98oe, and they cannot be operated on. 71bd and 71b, although they cannot read the full filename, pwin98oe, can still operate on it--cd pwin98oe can enter it. 71bk can also only read it as pwin98oe, but cannot operate on it--cd pwin98oe cannot enter it, the same as with ME. Why is this, and where is the file difference between 71bd and 71bk? Please give me more advice |

wxyl: That link was for MLD to use, not for you to download. To truly support long filenames on CDs under DOS, please first use MKLINK to create long filename entries, and then use DOSLFN.

Thank you, webmaster.
Your 71b and 71bd both support operating on long filenames on CDs, even though they cannot all be displayed. I wonder whether loading MKLINK and DOSLFN on the ME boot disk would work? It is also quite strange: on some CDs, long filenames can be operated on with an ordinary boot disk (without adding DOSLFN), while some cannot (the CD being discussed is bootable, and the long filenames inside it cannot be operated on). Why is that? Please enlighten me |

Last time we discussed the DOS boot disk that comes with WinME. The conclusion was that its compatibility is very poor and it should be completely retired, so it is recommended to use the more compatible MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk instead.

Yes, 7.1 really is quite good.
I know you are very busy. I still want to ask: what are the differences between 7.1bd and 7.1bk--could you explain it in terms of the files? It seems bd has some more functions than bk. What are they? Thanks |

Although 7.1bd and 7.1bk are both 7.1 boot disks, their configurations, uses, and so on are not the same. They were designed only to suit the needs of different users.
