When starting dos622, config.sys reports an error when it gets to emm386
unable to set page frame base address

config.sys
DEVICE=c:\dos\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=c:\dos\EMM386.EXE RAM
DOS=UMB
DOS=HIGH
FILES=50
BREAK=OFF
SWITCHES=/F

Machine specs:
P4 1.8
256M memory
Drive C is 2G, with dos622 installed
Drive D is 4G, with win98 installed

Why is your DOS version so old? No wonder the compatibility is so poor. Please upgrade DOS to MS-DOS 7.10. There is a download for the “MS-DOS 7.10 full installation edition” on the forum and website, for example there is an introduction and download here:

I just tried MS-DOS 7.1. After formatting a floppy disk I copied in himem.sys and emm386.exe, then re-edited config.sys.
After booting from the floppy, it still reports the same error.

Also, I looked at the config.sys from “Super Universal MS-DOS 7.1 Boot Disk”. It doesn't load EMS; it all uses the
NOEMS option (emm386), but after booting now I want to use EMS.

Are you using only the MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk or the full installation edition? Their configurations are different. Also, try loading EMM386 with the NOEMS option.

I used Virtual PC to emulate DOS 6.22. With the same config.sys installed, it boots normally. The virtual machine uses 32M of memory.
My machine has 256M. Could it be related to the memory being too large? How can this problem be solved?

I'm using the MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk. Booting EMM386 with NOEMS has no problem. But then there is only XMS and no EMS.

If you enable EMS memory, it will reduce the total size of UMB memory. Very few programs (for example, some old games) use EMS memory anyway. If you really need it, you might as well use TCPOWER to emulate EMS memory. Also, DOS 6.22 supports up to 64MB of memory, while MS-DOS 7.10 supports at least 4GB (that is, 4096MB) of memory.

Is TCPOWER a DOS tool? Where can I download it? I couldn't find it with Google.
