China DOS Union

I still have an original IBM 486DX33, 4MB RAM, 200MB hard disk, with a sound card, mouse, CD-ROM drive, and both 5.25" and 3.5" floppy drives. What else do you think it can still be used for? I’m thinking of just letting my mom play some small DOS games on it. I also want to use a Chinese character support system, load long filename support, and install an RTL8029 ISA network card. Is that possible? Can it run Pwin32? How should I configure the CONFIG file to leave as much conventional memory and system resources as possible?

Also, I downloaded Mini Win32, but it seems it can’t run directly from the hard disk. If it absolutely has to run in a RAM drive, then with only 4MB of memory I guess there’s no way it can run. How can I make it run from the hard disk like a directly installed Win32?

Just extract the compressed file directly to the hard disk, and it can run from the hard disk like a directly installed Win32.

Yes........ if you use memmaker/qemm, you can leave as much conventional memory as possible.

Looks like the moderator doesn’t really understand what I’m asking.

Of course extracting Pmwin3.img directly to the hard disk can make it run, but I don’t know if you noticed that in Win.bat it still has to create a Ramdrive. So actually it still has to copy the whole thing into memory to run. 4MB looks like it’s a bit too little. But if I directly extract the Pmwin.cab package to the hard disk and run win.com, the system keeps looking for drive A:, which is annoying as hell.

I checked, and UMBPCI does not support the 486. It’s said that URAM should be used, but I really don’t know how to use it. Can it move all devices into UMB? Could you just write out the entire Config file for me?

I don’t know whether Cloaking+Mscdex is better, or Vide-CDD, or Shsucdx.

Really, I’ve already forgotten almost everything about DOS stuff. Please, experts, do me a favor and give me the complete Config file suitable for this machine, okay?
