How do I set up two machines on a LAN to share a printer? - China DOS Union Forum

Setting up a shared printer can be done in the following steps:
(Assume there are two computers, A and B. A is the host, B is the client, and the printer is connected to A.)
1. First make sure the two machines are already connected to each other.

2. On machine A, add the printer, then right-click "Network Neighborhood" and choose "Properties", select "File and Printer Sharing", check both boxes inside, and follow the prompts to complete the installation.

3. On machine B, open "Printers" in "My Computer" on the desktop, choose "Add Printer" to enter the printer installation wizard. Choose "Network printer" and go to the next step. The system will ask you to enter the network path name of the shared printer. Choose Browse and you can see all shared printers in the current workgroup. Select the one you want to use and confirm it. Then the network path name of the shared printer will appear under "Network path or queue name". The format of the name is "\\computer name\printer name". Note that the computer name here refers to the computer name set under the "Identification" tab in the network settings. After all these settings are completed, go to the next step. The system will prompt you to install the printer driver, and the installation method is the same as for other peripherals.
4. When printing a file on machine B, it can use the printer connected to machine A.

Note: When installing the printer driver, if the printer is directly connected to the computer then install "Local printer"; if it is indirectly connected then install "Network printer". The above three steps are only suitable for WIN98, posted here for reference. I have not installed the WINXP operating system.

I have two computers in my room, both running XP, and both on the same LAN. Without configuring a server, can the printer be used as a shared printer?

Yes. First add the printer sharing service in the network settings on the computer that has the printer, then just share the printer.
