I use the msdos710 boot disk made by Wengier to boot a USB hard drive (I tried both related options). It works on my Toshiba laptop, but when booting on Dell, Lenovo, and compatible desktop PCs, they all say the hard drive can't be found, and a lot of messages appear. The hard drive I use is a Newman NM--USB966.

Question for the experts:
1. Why does the above problem happen? My Toshiba laptop supports USB boot, while the other desktops do not support USB boot. I don't know whether that has anything to do with it.
2. How can I make it boot from a desktop PC?
3. How can I copy out the prompt messages that appear during boot?
4. What is the best driver for the Newman usb hard drive?

So it's all about USB driver problems, right! I suggest you modify the setting parameters for DUSE and USBASPI yourself a bit, so they can adapt to different hardware specs...

My CONFIG.SYS file is configured as

devicehigh=a:\himem.sys /testmemff
devicehigh=a:\emm386.exe ram
Device=a:\usbaspi.sys
Device=a:\di1000dd.sys
dos=high,umb
files=45
buffers=30,4
lastdrive=z

My AUTOEXEC.BAT file is configured as

@echo off
path a:\
lh smartdrv 4096
mouse

The external hard drive is a Newman NM---USB966. Booting with the above configuration does not work.

Question for experts such as Wengier:

How should I modify the configuration so it can boot? Thanks!!

Which version of the boot disk are you using, and which version of USBASPI?

Wengier:
Hello!
I'm very sorry, I haven't had time to come here lately. You asked which version I was using, but I can't remember the exact date. It was at least from October. Please help solve this for me. You know, when a USB drive can't boot under a DOS system, it's a very painful thing. Thanks again!!
