No, I don't think so. An unofficial version is a test version, whether it's shareware or freeware.

But looking at its readme file, it mentions two versions, one shareware version and one freeware version.
My understanding is that the freeware version is the one with weaker functionality that doesn't need registration, while the shareware version has stronger functionality and requires registration to use. |

That's not how it is. All versions before ST 2.0 were shareware versions, while 2.x is freeware. Are you referring to this passage in its README:
This document may refer to a manual. This was only available to people who purchased the old registered versions. It is not supplied with the Freeware version which you have here. However, the program includes extensive on-line help, which you should use to familiarise yourself with the program and its capabilities. But that's not what it means. |
