VIA Technologies, a global leader in IC design and PC platform solutions, today officially introduced the brand-new VIA Eden-N processor at the 16th Microprocessor Forum held in San Jose. The VIA Eden-N processor uses the new high-efficiency Nehemiah core architecture, provides enhanced digital media performance and the industry's most advanced embedded hardware security technology, and comes in an extremely tiny nanoBGA package measuring only 15mm x 15mm, with power consumption as low as just 4 watts. It is the world's smallest, lowest-power, and at the same time most secure x86 processor.
Compared with traditional X86 processor products, the VIA Eden-N offers greater flexibility in system building and applications without sacrificing functionality or performance. For realizing the ideal of 3C integration, it is undoubtedly a shot in the arm, and it will also help establish a fully connected information environment. More compact and more portable ultra-thin notebook computers, even smaller full-function information appliances, and safer enterprise information application markets, all these are expected to become the stage where VIA Eden-N can really show its strengths in the future.
Centaur Technology president Glenn Henry stated that we continue to strengthen our leadership in developing innovative low-power processor solutions, and with the launch of the new VIA Eden-N processor, we are meeting the growing security demands of enterprise, government, and home users. The VIA Eden-N processor has fast, efficient, and cost-effective hardware encryption capability, providing security protection for all kinds of PCs and compact digital devices, and fully protecting business secrets and personal data in both wired and wireless network environments.
The world's smallest & lowest-power x86 processor
The VIA Eden-N processor combines the high-performance Nehemiah core architecture with NanoBGA packaging technology. Its size is only 15mm x 15mm, about the size of a one-dollar coin, and its area is less than half that of an Intel® Pentium® M processor. In addition, it has stronger heat dissipation capability, with power consumption of only 6 watts at 800MHz; even at 1GHz, power consumption is only 7 watts.
This processor's extremely low-power design is the most important condition for compact and quiet connected devices, because it does not need any fan to help dissipate heat while operating, significantly improving stability during around-the-clock operation. Its compact size also greatly reduces the space it occupies on the motherboard, making it easier to develop more compact and more highly integrated products, such as the upcoming 12cm x 12cm VIA Nano-ITX motherboard.
The world's most advanced x86 processor hardware security features
The VIA Eden-N processor has the PadLock data security design of the Nehemiah core, and adds even more advanced security functions, including the brand-new Advanced Cryptography Engine (ACE) and random number generators (RNGs), which can meet the ever-rising data security demands of enterprise, government, and home users, protecting confidential data inside the PC as well as data transmitted over networks. PadLock ACE complies with the AES advanced encryption standard recognized by the U.S. government, offering world-class security performance and perfectly carrying out encryption to protect the security of e-mails, personal files, online operations, and network transmission, with protection extending even to the latest high-bandwidth 802.11g wireless network connections. In addition, the PadLock ACE decoding speed in the 1GHz VIA Eden-N processor reaches as high as 12.5 Gigabits per second, which is 8 times faster than the roughly 1.5 Gbps decoding speed achieved by a high-power 3GHz Intel® Pentium® 4 using the best AES software, making its efficiency in data encryption and decryption truly superior.
Benjamin Jun, vice president of Cryptography Research, pointed out that the AES acceleration core inside the VIA Eden-N processor makes it easier for developers to use, while also quickly replacing the execution of today's AES software. Its high performance and simple programming model will enhance network connection scheduling and disk encryption functions for embedded and PC security application devices.
VIA Technologies general manager Chen Wen-chi said that VIA provides the necessary PadLock security kit free of charge, enabling developers to design more powerful and more complete security systems, free from operating system control, and tailor-make solutions that truly meet the security needs of enterprises, government units, and individual users.
About the VIA Eden-N processor
The VIA Eden-N processor uses the brand-new Nehemiah core, with an integrated PadLock security suite built directly into it, including the new PadLock Advanced Cryptography Engine (PadLock Advanced Cryptography Engine, abbreviated ACE) and random number generators (RNGs). With the market-leading 12.5Gbs decoding rate, the VIA Eden-N minimizes processor load, and its compact, low-power design can easily protect the security of application devices.
The VIA Eden-N processor comes in three speeds: 533MHz, 800MHz, and 1GHz. It uses extremely tiny nanoBGA processor packaging technology, making it the smallest x86 processor on the market. The NanoBGA package measures only 15mm x 15mm, extending the x86 architecture into consumer electronic devices while remaining compatible with PC hardware and software. In addition, the VIA Eden-N processor is also the world's lowest-power x86 processor, with power consumption of only 4W, 6W, and 7W respectively.
The VIA Eden-N processor features advanced performance such as StepAhead™ advanced branch prediction, 6 new pipeline stages, the SSE multimedia instruction set, a full-speed floating point unit (FPU), and an enhanced 64KB full-speed L2 cache with 16-way associativity. The VIA Eden-N processor supports enhanced digital media application devices, such as high-quality DVD and audio playback, and can also be paired with the widely praised VIA CLE266 chipset, integrating a hardware MPEG-2 decoder, support for DDR266 SDRAM, VIA Vinyl™ audio chip with integrated 5.1 surround sound, high-speed USB2.0 ports, and 10/100 Fast Ethernet functions.
