One day in 1945, a mysterious baby girl appeared at an orphanage in Cleveland. No one knew who her parents were. She grew up alone, with no one associating with her.

Until one day in 1963, when she inexplicably fell in love with a drifter, things finally started to get better. But the good times did not last long, and one misfortune after another followed. First, when she discovered that she was pregnant with the drifter's child, the drifter suddenly disappeared. When I was little, my parents praised me for being as gentle as a little lamb. After I started school, I respected my teachers and got along with my classmates. After I started working, the friendliness and sincerity I offered were repaid with indifference and hypocrisy. After seeing so much of the darkness in human nature, I finally learned to protect myself in dealing with things, and to speak without touching anything important. But none of these were my original intention, nor do they fit my nature; they were only to protect myself. This contradiction once left me in a difficult situation. I began to suspect that kindness equals weakness, and simplicity equals stupidity. A person like me is bound to be a loser in an officialdom full of intrigue and deception. After going abroad, I saw lovely and simple people everywhere helping and encouraging one another. Trust, morality, and fairness were no longer hypocritical slogans! I felt greatly comforted, because I once again understood that kindness and sincerity are the most precious qualities in human nature. How did our country, our nation, our government become like this?! Think about the unequal distribution of wealth in society, government corruption, and the numbness of the people—isn't this exactly that China of which Lu Xun mourned its misfortune and raged at its refusal to fight?!
