Recently, about 2,000 Linux supporters in India held a three-day conference in Bangalore, India’s technology center, and expressed great satisfaction with the growing use of the Linux operating system and the strong support from industry giants like IBM.

Linux supporters said that Microsoft CTO Bill Gates’s three-day visit to India last month sparked widespread attention toward Linux, which is now posing a challenge to Microsoft’s popular Windows operating system.

Microsoft announced that it would invest 400 million US dollars in India. Microsoft believes that Linux cannot compare with Windows in terms of security and convenience. Linux supporters, however, stressed the advantages of the free software in flexibility and cost.

Atul Chitnis, an adviser to the Bangalore Linux User Group, said that rather than someone arranging publicity and importance for the open-source movement, it was more like someone had arranged Bill Gates’s arrival and Microsoft’s attempt to counter Linux with 400 million dollars.

Bangalore is a main battleground for the Linux and Windows platforms, because many of India’s software developers are concentrated there, which can reduce costs while stimulating innovation. It is estimated that the number of developers in India has increased from 400,000 to 1,300,000 in four years.

This Linux conference was the largest gathering of its kind in India. During the event, about 70 technical seminars were held on Linux in desktops, portable devices, robotics, and genetics. Linux users crowded into shops selling Linux books and CDs to buy what they needed. They promoted the penguin logo, the Linux mascot, and wore T-shirts proclaiming Linux to be the operating system of the 21st century.

Linux is source-code-available software that can be freely copied, used, and modified, which is completely different from proprietary industry standards such as the Microsoft Windows operating system. Analysts believe Microsoft needs India’s developers to create reliable and inexpensive software based on the Windows operating system to compete with open-source software.

Microsoft’s global business rivals, such as IBM and HP, are now vigorously promoting the Linux operating system.

Kalpana Margabandhu, general manager of IBM’s software laboratory, said that IBM believes Linux will become an important component of information technology solutions and architecture.

Microsoft Windows and Linux are competing worldwide for the server market that manages computer networks. At the Linux conference, IBM’s Bangalore lab demonstrated a personal digital assistant device running the Linux operating system. Designer, a handheld computer from India’s Simputer company priced at 200 US dollars, is also currently using the Linux system. More than 100 representatives from major Indian software companies such as Infosys Technologies and Wipro attended the conference.

This conference also received somewhat ingratiating attention from Microsoft. Microsoft sent two senior officials to give speeches at the conference on the subject of “shared source,” a shared-source plan that can disclose limited proprietary code to partners.
我完全同意设想建立DOS组织“DOS联盟” ,也就是说和Wengier、以及“起步”站长莫老师等DOS战友一起来建立这个“DOS联盟”,以发展我国自主OS(操作系统)的高度去完成我们共同的愿望。
