Every old hand from that era surely has quite a few tools for DOS in their hands. Some software is really top-notch, and once a hard drive fails it all goes up in smoke, so I suggest the moderators set up a DOS software exchange section, so everyone can permanently preserve their curated tools!

China DOS Union originally had a public FTP, and all the good stuff was in there, I think.
Right now, because of space limitations, the FTP still can't be made available for everyone to use for the time being. We're trying hard to find a solution now. |

Uploading good stuff to FTP still isn't safe enough, because the FTP server's hard drive can also go bad. The safest method is still to burn the good stuff onto CDs and keep them as a century-long collection!

Using CDs may not necessarily make it a century-long collection either....

But I really can't think of any safer way than that to preserve data!

There is only one way to preserve important materials: every few years, switch to a different storage medium

If possible, using a solid-state drive (SSD) for storage would be best

The following is quoted from 红色狂想's post at 2003-10-18 8:59:53: Hehe~ nowadays CD-R/CD-RW lose effectiveness in less than 8 or 9 years... Best to use a RAID-1 backup machine, hehe~ |

Looks like the burning method for recordable discs and factory-pressed one-time read-only CDs really isn't quite the same!

I strongly agree with the OP's suggestion. I also have a lot of old software that I need to share with everyone. Please, moderators, give it some thought and post a reply!

Not 8 or 9 years, but 2 or 3 years :-)
The poster above always has so much good stuff, I'm envious... |
