I ran into a problem while using "MS-DOS 7.10 Full Installation Edition (with graphical installer)" from the pinned post in the Boot Techniques section:
No matter whether I choose the complete mode with add-on or the minimal mode that saves as much as possible,
after installation it won't boot, and all I get is the cursor blinking constantly in the upper-left corner of a black screen

AthlonXP 2000+
HY 512M DDR

Gainward Geforce4 Ti4800SE 64M DDR
SB Live!5.1D
Maxtor DiamondMax 9 80G ATA133
16x DVD+52x CDRW

What was the previous operating system? When installing, did you choose not to copy the system files or boot sector?

Do you mean that after the Win2K boot menu appears, choosing the MS-DOS entry won't boot?

I'm guessing it's because there's something wrong with the disk or there is fragmentation, causing IO.SYS to be non-contiguous. The MS-DOS 7.10 installer did mention this during installation, namely that you should use SCANDISK and DEFRAG to check and tidy up the disk.
