I just bought a MAXTOR 40G hard drive, and I want to make a dual-hard-drive system together with my old 15G hard drive, so I installed WIN 2000 on the new drive, while WIN ME is already installed on the old drive. What should I set up so that no matter which operating system I boot, the drive letters won't get mixed up? Waiting for good news!

You'd better put the two operating systems on one hard drive. The drive letter mix-up problem in WIN2000 is easy to solve, but in WINME it's comparatively hard to deal with.

Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management -> right-click the corresponding disk -> choose Change Drive Letter and Paths -> Edit, then just reassign drive letters to your partitions.

For DOS/Win9x/WinME, as long as you don't set a primary partition on the second hard drive, it'll be fine.

Install ME on the primary partition of the first hard drive, and install 2000 on the primary partition of the second hard drive Just install 2000 as NT format and that'll do

The method from the poster above definitely won't work. It's best to put both operating systems on the new hard drive, and make the old hard drive entirely logical partitions. If you really want one operating system on each hard drive, then don't set a primary partition on the second hard drive; make it entirely logical partitions. Then put WIN2000 on a logical partition of the second hard drive, while of course the active partition is still drive C (that is, the partition with WINME installed). There's another method: use the multi-system partition software magic partition to create two C drives (one visible, one hidden), and install ME and 2000 on them separately. When booting, it will let you choose which primary partition to boot. When you choose one of them, it will hide the other one. That way there won't be any drive letter mix-up. Actually, drive letter mix-up is mainly caused by having multiple primary partitions.

If you want to make two or more C drives, SPFDISK should be able to do it.
