How do I check 1G-2G small hard drives for bad sectors or memory problems?

The hard drive can be tested with NDD; memory needs other tools such as MEMTEST. There should be some on Wengier's site.
HWINFO mentioned above should probably work too.

Use FORMAT /U to format it, and when it's done, see whether there are any bad sectors. Personally I think this is the most selfless way; no bad-sector problem can escape it.
