0. Make a special floppy disk
format a: /s
Copy the following files to this floppy disk:
himem.sys , emm386.exe , ifshlp.sys , smartdrv.exe , subst.exe , edit.exe , vide-cdd.sys,
mscdex.exe , cloaking.exe , findcd.exe , aset.exe

Edit a:\config.sys so it contains the following:
dos=noauto,high,umb
device=a:\himem.sys
device=a:\emm386.exe noems
device=a:\ifshlp.sys
device=a:\vide-cdd.sys /d:mscdrom
device=a:\cloaking.exe
device=a:\smartdrv.exe /double-buffer /d+

Edit a:\autoexec.bat so it contains the following:
@echo off
mscdex /d:mscdrom
findcd 1
aset path=a:\;z:\mini98
aset temp=
aset tmp=
aset windir=
aset winbootdir=
subst z: c:\

Edit a:\msdos.sys so it contains the following

WinDir=Z:\MINI98
WinBootDir=Z:\MINI98
HostWinBootDrv=A

BootMulti=0
BootGUI=0
DoubleBuffer=0
AutoScan=0
WinVer=4.10.2222

1. Boot the computer with the special floppy disk (hereafter called simply the floppy disk)

2. Install windows 98 to z:\mini98
Before the final setup, the system will restart once. The purpose of this boot is to make some settings for win98, especially registry settings.
The registry at this point is the simplest. So take this opportunity to boot the computer with the floppy disk.
Run win/d:m to enter safe mode, then edit and streamline the system registry; you can use software such as Super Rabbit. Then run
regedit to export the registry as c:\1.reg.

3. Rebuild mini98 according to the file list
Boot the computer with the floppy disk.
Rename the c:\mini98 folder to c:\miniold, then create a new mini98 folder under c:\ again, and according to the file list copy files from c:\miniold
to c:\mini98.
Then run the following commands
regedit /e c:\2.reg
regedit /c c:\2.reg
regedit /c c:\1.reg

4. Run the win command to start the newly rebuilt mini98 and see what shortcomings it has so you can improve it (this process may need to be repeated many times),
and finally boot the computer again with the floppy disk and run the win command to complete the final test.

5. Refer to the file list and delete useless files and folders to obtain the final mini_win_98.

Further explanation: the mini98 folder obtained this way can be copied anywhere, for example to d:\xyz\, then you only need to change
subst z: c:\ in a:\autoexec.bat to subst z: d:\xyz. It can also be made to run in a RAM disk,
you just need to set the RAM disk as drive z, and copy mini98 to z:\.

Or maybe it could even be turned into a truly universal MiniWin98, without needing SUBST to make it Z:. Try changing all the Z:\MINI98 entries in the registry to relative paths or the %windir% variable and see what happens?

Following the list, it's still 24M.

Some files can be deleted, but you have to consider making the resulting mini98 able to support running most programs.
Recently I've been thinking of a way to remove SimSun and at the same time add system functionality. Take a look at the new thread I'm going to post.

Modifying the registry seems a bit too much work for me, there seem to be a lot of items to change. I'm a bit tired, everybody can study it a bit. Hehe

If SimSun is removed, does that make it an English version?
Floor8 dos时代菜鸟 Posted 2003-09-10 00:00

No, it's not an English version, because the kernel is still the Chinese version, so it's very easy to find the Chinese character support system nodes. For example, after removing SimSun, I used the utility software ucwin to handle Chinese display and input methods and so on. That saves about 5M of space, and also adds a lot of good features.

I used this mini98 to make a CD, then put the necessary PC repair/maintenance software onto the CD, such as recovernt, Jiangmin data repair, ghostxp, clearMBR, etc., and also winrar. By modifying the registry and other methods, I also made the mini98 on the virtual z: drive call the Win Rising antivirus software on the CD. At this point, this CD can already handle most standalone maintenance and repair work. And the mini98 loaded into memory is only about 26M.

Why are the two files CONAGENT.EXE and START.EXE not included? They're very useful..

I think the main thing is functionality. A 98 made this way probably won't support networking very well. As for display, it can probably only do 16 colors.
If it's meant to run in memory, then yes, the more streamlined the better, but I think the most important thing is practicality.
It would be great if a 98 like this could support all kinds of system testing and repair software

My purpose in making this mini98 is to use it for maintenance work. We can put a large number of DOS utility programs onto the CD, and then make shortcuts for them.

Do you still remember PQMagic PartitionMagic from the earlier years? When you ran it under windows9x, the system would forcibly exit windows9x and enter DOS to run PartitionMagic, and when you exited PartitionMagic, it would automatically start windows9x again (note, this is starting windows9x, not starting the computer). This is actually a shortcut of PartitionMagic doing the work.

Based on this principle, we can transplant a large number of DOS utility programs onto the desktop of this mini98. Operation under a graphical interface, plus the explorer program, support for long filenames, fat32 partitions.... no matter what, it's much more comfortable, right? And we can name the shortcuts in Chinese, so if we also add instructions, even a fool can become a computer repair expert, hehe.

Also, in order to save space in mini98, we can put the command folder onto the CD too, and then during boot from a: add aset path=%path%;%cdrom%\command to autoexec.bat and that's enough.
