1969: Unix was born (by Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie). This was Unix Version 1.

1971: Unix 2

1972: The C language was born.

1973: Unix 3, mostly rewritten in C.

1974: Unix 4

1977: Unix Version 6. The University of California, Berkeley enhanced it based on Version 6 and released 1BSD.

1978: Kernighan and Ritchie co-authored "The C Programming Language" (historically known as K&R).

1979: Unix Version 7, 4BSD

1980: Seattle Computer released 86-DOS, written by Tim Paterson. This was the predecessor of MS-DOS.

1981: MS bought Seattle Computer and renamed 86-DOS to MS-DOS. In the same year, IBM released a 16-bit PC bundled with MS's MSDOS 1.0; MS and SCO jointly developed XENIX on the PC.

1982: NOVELL was born.

1983: 4.2BSD; ANSI C

1984: Apple released a graphical-interface operating system. In the same year, AT&T was broken up by the U.S. government into seven subsidiaries. MS released DOS 3.0.

1985: MS released Windows 1.0; Richard Stallman launched the GNU project.

1986: POSIX (Portable Operating System Interface) appeared. (defining open systems)

1987: MS released Windows 2.0 and DOS 3.3. In the same year, IBM released OS/2, NOVELL released Netware 386; 4.3BSD; Sun released SunOS based on 4.2BSD/4.3BSD. Boland released Turbo C.

1988: MS released DOS 4.0. In the same year, Unix System V R4 appeared. 4.4BSD

1990: MS released Windows 3.0.

1991: Finnish college student Linus Torvalds made the Linux source code public. In the same year, DOS released 5.0.

1992: MS released Windows 3.1. In the same year, System V R4.2 appeared. Sun Solaris also appeared.

1993: MS released Windows NT

1995: MS released Windows 95, Windows NT 3.x

1996~1997: MS released Windows NT 4.0

1998: MS released Windows 98, NT 5.0 was renamed the NT 2000 series

1999: Linux shone brilliantly, and people began to discover the advantages of Linux. Major heavyweight companies one after another announced support for Linux's development, and even MS began to feel nervous about Linux. This year was also one in which awareness in the Open Source community flourished vigorously.
