Many people think DOS is single-user and single-tasking, but that is actually wrong. Under DOS, aside from software that makes DOS support multitasking through various system enhancement programs (such as TriDOS, B&F, etc.), there is also a DOS whose kernel itself is multitasking and multiuser, and that is Multiuser DOS, also known as REAL/32. It was developed on the basis of DR-DOS. Not only is its compatibility very good—for example, it supports starting Win3.x—but its DOS kernel (also the two files IBMBIO.COM and IBMDOS.COM) has comprehensive multitasking capability, and it is preemptive multitasking (that is, the kind of multitasking in Win9x). It can run multiple programs at the same time without interfering with each other, and you can switch between them with the Alt+ESC keys (similar to Alt+Tab in Windows); pressing Ctrl+ESC brings up the task list. One very important point is that its latest 7.9x version fully supports FAT32 partitions and large hard disks, and it is still under continuous development!
