Question About Old Graphics Cards - China DOS Union Forum

At the beginning of the year I sold my old machine and switched to a 1700++GF3TI, but unfortunately a lot of DOS games can’t be played anymore.
So I made up my mind and went to the computer mall to buy an old S3 PCI 4M graphics card.
But now under both W2K and ME, I still can’t get into DOS games, and it says
Fail to set vesa 640*480*256 mode
Then ME restarts; 2K is a bit better.
Asking the experts for advice: how can I get the games to run smoothly?
Also, how do you use that thing called SDD?
