News flash:
CNR reports: In his latest book Adam's Curse, Professor Sykes of human genetics at Oxford University in Britain points out that the Y chromosome, unique to males, cannot repair damage caused by mutations on its own, and is therefore fated to face extinction in the end, possibly resulting in a world with only women.
According to a report in the U.S. World Journal, Sykes estimates from the rate at which the Y chromosome is gradually disappearing that after 5,000 generations, humanity will be left with only women. In other words, the time men can still survive is only about 125,000 years.
Although Sykes uses Adam from the Old Testament to represent men, he does not accept the claim that “God turned one of Adam's ribs into Eve.” He firmly believes that men are the product of genetic variation in women, because this is a “fact” already proven by genetic research. Sykes says that men have only one Y chromosome, unlike “Eve,” whose X chromosomes come in a pair.
It is understood that during the process of genetic mutation, a pair of X chromosomes can maintain their genetic advantage by copying healthy genes from each other, but the Y chromosome has only one copy, and can only let itself be pushed toward decline by defective genes caused by mutation.
But Sykes believes that humans can make use of rapidly developing genetic engineering technology to artificially copy the intact genetic material of a healthy Y chromosome to the corresponding position on a defective Y chromosome, just like organ transplantation from another body.
