WENGIER, please take a look at what basic things XMSDSK still needs when booting from the hard disk :)

After formatting the hard disk with FORMAT C:/S and rebooting, write the following two files on drive C, copy XMSDSK.EXE into it, and reboot again. It will stop at a blinking dot, or stop after showing the version number. So, if I want to simplify things as much as possible and create a virtual disk when booting from a hard disk partition, what is the absolute minimum, the fewest things, that I still need to add when using XMSDSK? :)

Hoping big brother WENGIER can kindly give me some advice :)

Contents of autoexec.bat:

@echo off

set ramdrv=
set ramdrv=z:
xmsdsk 4096 %ramdrv% /y /t

Contents of config.sys:

devicehigh=c:\xmsdsk.exe 4096

Try changing devicehigh=c:\xmsdsk.exe 4096 in CONFIG.SYS to device=c:\xmsdsk.exe 4096, or remove it and see.

Removing it doesn't work. If I remove it, at startup it will prompt that XMSDSK loading is missing in CONFIG.SYS, then ask whether to load it. If I choose yes, it stops after showing the version number. It even stops after showing only memor from the word memory, really strange :(

Is it MS-DOS 7.10? Did you load HIMEM.SYS??

Then I'll try loading it first :)

No, it still doesn't work, it doesn't even show the version number

CONFIG.SYS contents are as follows
device=himem.sys /testmemff
files=10
buffers=10
dos=high,umb
stacks=9,256
lastdrive=z

AUTOEXEC.BAT contents are as follows

@ECHO OFF
CLS
SET DIRCMD=/O
set ramdrv=z:
C:\xmsdsk.EXE 4096 %ramdrv% /y /t

—————————————————————————————————————————————
If I remove all the options in AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS and enter the hard disk directly, then run
xmsdsk.exe 4096 z: /y /t

the system will prompt:

system memory allocation error

can't load command ,system halt

WENGIER, can you help find the cause? :)I just can't accept it, why can I never get it working? On a boot disk I can use it however I want, but on the hard disk I just can't get it to work no matter what :(

I got it working :)

As long as you remove the XMSDSK loading line from CONFIG.SYS

and then remove the /y parameter from AUTOEXEC.BAT, it works :)

Thanks to WENGIER for the selfless help :)

Good night :)
