DiskGen really does look pretty good, but for some reason, as soon as I run it the system either hangs or just reboots. I wonder whether any of you experts have run into this kind of situation. Also, when making boot disks, aren't we limiting ourselves too much to floppies? We can write batch files and make menus, with options to read data from a CD into a virtual drive. Wouldn't that make a very good bootable CD?

No way? I put DiskGen on the boot disk generated by Win98 itself, and it's always worked smoothly for me.
Could it be that there's something wrong with your boot disk?

As for the DiskGen problem, you can try it out slowly yourself, like a clean boot (cLEAN bOOT), HIMEM boot (hIMEM oNLY)...... Anyway, this isn't really a big problem, maybe..... it's very complicated

Bootable CDs have existed for a long time already.
But the most primitive thing was still “multi-floppy boot,” hehe!
Back in the DOS 6.2 era, I made a boot disk set (7 disks total) and gave it to my classmates......

Now I've bought a 32x burner (32x, so slow!) and can finally... BOOTCD... but I can't bear to waste CD-R(W) ah... so I can only practice with VPC + Winimage.
Somehow somewhere I've got to choose.
No matter if it is win or lose.

There may be a problem with memory allocation. When I use that software, it often crashes because the memory setup isn't correct!

Check whether there's still space left on your floppy... DiskGen needs a little extra space.

Thanks, everyone. After trying things out, I've already solved this problem. It was mainly a memory allocation issue. DiskGen 2.0 uses more memory than DiskMan 1.3, and conventional memory has to be at least close to 600K. Originally, when there was no UMB manager (such as emm386.exe), loading smartdrv, mouse, etc. made the available memory insufficient. If anyone runs into some program that won't run in the future, try checking whether it's this kind of problem. Thanks!!

DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=UMBPCI.SYS
(Just adding these two is enough, don't use EMM)
