I made a DOS boot disk with XP, then copied in programs like format and fdisk from a Win98 boot disk, but they wouldn't work. It said incorrect ms-dos version (wrong MS-DOS version). What's going on?? Logically, even if it didn't work, XP's should at least be newer, so it ought to be backward-compatible, right?

The boot disk made by WinXP is MS-DOS 8.0, while the one made by Win98 is MS-DOS 7.10..

Then why isn't it backward-compatible? Programs from 7.1 can't be used in 8.0??

There is a higher-version FORMAT.
Take a look at what's on this disk:

A higher-version FORMAT
means a version compatible with 7.10
and 8.0

It's basically the same version of format!
Microsoft simply couldn't be bothered to write another format at all!

Since I just got here, I still don't know the ropes . Right now I'm starting from the beginning and reading everyone's posts, and I want to make myself an MS-DOS 7.1 boot disk. — The key is learning, and I hope all you experts will give me plenty of guidance.
3x in advance!
