IBM built a new machine for testing IQ, called "Deeper and Deeper and Deeper and Deeper and Deeper Blue." Then they brought in an undergraduate, a master's student, and a doctoral student to test it.
The undergraduate put his head in, and the machine played a pleasant tune and said: "Congratulations! Your IQ is 150! You're a genius!"
The master's student stuck his head in, and the machine said flatly: "Your IQ is 100. You are a talented person."
Finally the doctoral student also stuck his head in. After the machine rattled and clattered for a while, it said: "No throwing rocks into the machine!"
The doctoral student was furious. He went to the administrator and demanded to see the program's source code. The administrator granted his request. The doctoral student carefully inspected and modified the original program until he was satisfied.
This time the doctoral student was much more cautious. He didn't stick his head in directly, but first found a rock and put it in. After another round of rattling and clattering, the machine said: "Ah! So you are a doctoral student! Please forgive me for not recognizing such a great person!"
