Where are external commands stored?
Why doesn't c:\dos work when I use it?

Search your hard disk.....
Use dir *.exe or dir *.com to look for it....

I used dir to search, but unfortunately I couldn't find any file named dos.
Do you mean I should look for dos.exe or dos.com?

He's telling you to find format.com, and once you find it you'll be pretty close to the answer

C:\>dir format.com /s/a

The DOS path gets automatically added to PATH every time it boots.
If you boot up without running AUTOEXEC.BAT, then use set, you'll see it.
Usually it's c:\dos( (if only DOS is installed) or c:\windows\command(windows (DOS under Windows)

Right in the directory where DOS is located.
