I tried the 98 edition of ucdos and version 7.0 of ccdos, but found that after installing them neither would work; after opening them I couldn't input anything.

That's exactly how to use it. ucdos98 doesn't need to load Pinyin; if you use Wubi then it has to be loaded. Just bring up the shortcut key and it'll be fine. It works under winme, win98\win95\dos,
