Debian

Redhat
LFS/Gentoo
{Slackware
SuSE
Magic} these are not ranked in any particular order;
all other distributions
RedFlag: trash, trash, absolutely do not use it!

Desktop environments:
No KDE, No GNOME. (Installing one is fine, just don't use it normally)
Use the command line more (don't learn from brother Sanlan)
Recommended: XWindow+FVWM( www.fvwm.org )+mozilla+ROX-Filer

Does 2000server conflict with ext2? After installing linux, 2000 won't budge anymore

Hehe, this kind of thing still depends on each person's own experience. I don't really like RedHat. Judging just from the installation experience, Slackware seems pretty good, but I'm using ManDrake now, and it doesn't feel bad either.
But the one I dislike most really is RedFlag :）
