How to Answer Phone Calls While Dialing Up with a "Modem"

Maybe many friends are like me, troubled by not being able to answer phone calls while going online. I looked through many books and materials and still couldn’t find a way to solve this problem. Could it really be impossible to achieve this function? No, I finally managed to find a way on my own. I don’t dare keep it to myself, so I’m writing it here for everyone’s reference.

I use a TCL668b computer, with WindowsMe as the operating system, and it has a built-in Smartlink 56K soft modem. Since the driver that came with the machine did not have this function, I searched on Smartlink’s homepage and found some drivers available for download. One of them was version 2.90, suitable for WindowsMe. With a give-it-a-try attitude I downloaded it, removed the original driver, and then installed this version. After rebooting and trying it out, I found that the modem’s terminal window had changed from English to Chinese, which felt very friendly. After connecting and testing many times, I also found that the connection speed had improved to a certain extent. Before, it was mostly 45333bps-48000bps, but now it can generally reach 52000bps. At the same time, a “ModemSetting” settings item appeared in the “Control Panel.” Open it, and there is an option called “modem hold.” Under “incoming calls,” select “always answer incoming calls and suspend the Internet connection.” Under “if the ISP does not support answering calls while on the Internet,” select “I want to receive incoming calls and disconnect the Internet connection.” Click “OK” and it’s done, though your phone line must support “call waiting.”

After that, when a call comes in, a prompt box will automatically pop up to remind you that there is an incoming call, and at the same time the phone will start ringing too. All right, now you can just pick up the handset and answer it directly. So, how about that, pretty great, right!

我完全同意设想建立DOS组织“DOS联盟” ,也就是说和Wengier、以及“起步”站长莫老师等DOS战友一起来建立这个“DOS联盟”,以发展我国自主OS(操作系统)的高度去完成我们共同的愿望。

Now it’s all broadband, and very few people use modems anymore.
