It depends both ways, no need to load emm386 and himen, but sometimes there are a few problems, like sys. I use 8.0 for floppies, and DOS 7.1 for CDs,

Of course MS-DOS 8.0 is not as good as MS-DOS 7.1. We reached that conclusion here long ago.
