For convenience when reinstalling the system, I copied the contents of the WIN98 CD to drive D so I wouldn't need to use the CD-ROM drive. But after formatting drive C, when reinstalling it says a .PAK file is missing and can't continue (when in fact it isn't missing). When I use the CD there is no such error. Please give me some advice (I'm using a WIN98 system recovery disc)

I’ve installed WIN98 in all kinds of ways, and often on different machines too, but I’ve never run into this kind of message. If a file is missing, usually it says it’s a CAB file. Could you describe the situation in a bit more detail?

Can I ask whether a system recovery disc is the same as a WIN98 installation disc? Also, what are the files PAK.000~PAK.017 used for?

I haven’t run into this kind of problem either. I’ve reinstalled WIN98 on countless machines, but I’ve never seen this happen. I also haven’t used a recovery disc before, but from the wording, I think a “recovery” disc should be different from a “boot” disk, right? Give it a try with a boot disk.

Also, if you run into the kind of weird problem where the system just won’t install, you can try swapping the memory. Quite often this sort of thing is caused by memory incompatibility, so the system won’t install even though applications can still run. Give it a try.

If I remember right, if the power goes out during installation, some files can’t be found. Try copying it over again.
