I already analyzed the uses of DOS last time in the site affairs section~ It really is hard for DOS to get connected with commercialization~ After all, most vendors now support LINUX more~ The only places where DOS can really stand out are the ones I mentioned last time in the site affairs section~
The forum being named "China DOS Union" is not wrong at all~ This forum is the number one DOS website for Chinese people~ You simply can’t find any other DOS websites anymore~

I noticed this issue of not doing anything practical a long time ago, but because of habit, I still come here whenever I go online. But how many people who really write programs have time to come to a place like this? Waiting for them to come is unrealistic, because our level is not enough to attract them. To put it bluntly, we’re not qualified to discuss things with them (if you think that goes too far, then just take it as me talking about myself; at least that’s how I see myself). If we really want to develop on our own, we can only choose some people who are interested in programming and have a bit of foundation (to put it bluntly, you can’t expect someone who doesn’t even know how to use DOS to develop DOS software, right?? Of course, I’m not looking down on beginners; we all came from that stage). We have to train ourselves and develop little by little on our own, or absorb some things from GNU and FREEDOS, or do secondary development. Even if we don’t have people of very high level, we can always find teaching materials, right? If one person finds something good, everyone shares it. I think that is the forum’s real use, right??
As for commercialization, it depends on how it is done. In many cases we are making an early mistake once common in China’s computer world (of course, I didn’t live through that era, so I can only talk about it a little). Back then, when choosing between Chinese cards and Chinese software platforms, people often made a very obvious mistake: most people thought Chinese cards were something tangible, so more people chose Chinese cards than software platforms. This was obviously a hardware-biased mentality. But now when we talk about commercialization, we are making a similar mistake again, thinking our system is something tangible while service is not. Actually, when we work on DOS development, it’s not very possible to make money from our software, because of Chinese people’s habits, and because most of what we make is modified from other people’s things. If copyrights are involved, we first have to pay other people, unless we rewrite all the code from scratch (of course, there’s no problem selling software we developed ourselves based on someone else’s platform). Right now we can crack other people’s things, but if we want to take the commercial road, then we must consider copyright issues. I think this union wants to become a proper union, not a union for pirated DOS, right??
So providing help services and peripheral software (I think this is also a service, as a kind of support for the system) is more reasonable. As for forming our own system, judging from the more practical situation, that probably can’t be accomplished in the short term (personal opinion; if someone feels he has the ability to do it, then I truly admire his ability, really).

I usually don’t like being this serious, so I’m only saying this once in a while. If it differs from your view, then just treat it as some unusual words from me in an unusual state. Also, here I’m using “we,” but I’m not a moderator, so if anyone thinks I’m not qualified to say that, then just change the word “we” to “you”
Without realizing it I got serious again for a while. Looks like I need to go relax a bit now I’m going home for dinner, 88 everyone

Among all the moderators, I’m probably the weakest one in terms of ability. Back then, I came here simply because of my love for DOS. From MYS’s old-brand DOS website First Step, to New DOS Era, and then to the China DOS Union Forum, I’ve followed along the whole way. When I first got into computers, what I learned was DOS, but unfortunately I never learned it very deeply. Sometimes I really want to modify a program myself, but all I can do is sigh in helpless admiration, haha! As for the development of our DOS forum, I think what LanE said about “providing help services and peripheral software” is very good, because I believe that’s exactly the kind of service many people need (I guess “Wuyou” is probably this kind of model too, though I’m not sure if that’s right). I believe there definitely are programming experts in the forum, it’s just that maybe they don’t have the time... After all, for them, “work comes first, interest comes second.” They still haven’t had time to show their skills on the forum...

The following is quoted from LanE’s post on 2003-7-22 11:26:32:

How could that be... really, thanks for pointing it out...
