Every time I need to start grub4dos, I have to go through the XP boot menu first. Then going into Windows from there is redundant, but I don't want to touch the MBR of the hard drive.

I thought maybe I could first use SPFDISK to carve out a small FAT partition, put all the grub4dos files into it, and then use SPFDISK to set that partition to boot from?

It is completely okay, and that small partition doesn't have to be FAT. NTFS is completely okay. You can use this tool here http://bbs.wuyou.com/viewthread.php?tid=57675&extra=page%3D1
