The Most Innovative Operating System: BeOS 5
librain.hanzify.org 2003-7-4 Yiyu Network

BeOS can be called the most innovative operating system. Although there are still not many applications developed specifically for it at present, its own capabilities are already powerful enough. For people who often work with digital video, 3D graphics, or high-quality audio files, what they want from an operating system is a clean, simple user interface and the ability to handle massive amounts of data quickly and smoothly. BeOS is their ideal operating platform.
BeOS's biggest feature is its multithreaded processing capability. On multiprocessor systems, applications written specifically for BeOS can have each processor handle different tasks at the same time, greatly improving processor efficiency. In particular, the tasks running simultaneously on each processor can come either from different applications or from different functional modules within the same application. For example, one processor can edit an image while another browses the Web. But if BeOS is running on a single-processor system, it can still execute multiple tasks as smoothly as Windows.

BeOS uses a fast 64-bit file system and supports massive hard disks of over 1TB (1,000GB). Don't think that capacity is unimaginably huge—actually, a single uncompressed movie usually takes up at least several hundred GB of hard disk space. BeOS also has a memory protection system, which ensures that every application distributed in memory runs safely. When one application crashes, the others remain completely unaffected.

Mac users will find that BeOS's graphical interface is extremely similar to the Mac Finder; in fact, BeOS also supports AppleTalk printers. In networking, BeOS supports various communication protocols based on Internet standards, and even supports TCP/IP printers. It integrates simple Web, FTP, and Telnet servers, so anyone on the Internet can communicate with you. It also provides a genuine mail client and Web browser, and there are currently more and more BeOS applications available for download online.

The technical value of BeOS is impressive, and so is its user interface. Mac and Windows users alike recognize that its GUI is simple and elegant, while those familiar with Unix-based SGI machines will appreciate BeOS's unique command-line interface, which effectively recreates the Unix environment.
