China DOS Union

In the 1990s, Chinese operating systems were mostly divided between UCDOS and SPDOS. These two mainstream Chinese platforms were introduced as essential content in many computer books. At that time, middle school computer classes only taught three things: DOS, WPS, and FOXBASE.

A few days ago, I downloaded a floppy disk image of SPDOS from this forum. It was an old IMG file (WinImage couldn't extract it). Later, I borrowed a floppy drive and used HD-COPY to extract it. The original file was DOS 3.3 (which doesn't support large hard drives). I made my own spdos.img (DOS 7 version). In this era dominated by Windows, I believe many people still have feelings for classic software from the past DOS era. This SPDOS platform has no practical value today, and it's hard to find online. It's just to satisfy the desire for collection.

This IMG file can be extracted with WinImage, and the files in the folder are version 5.0 of SPDOS (containing WPS 2.0). It can be tested with Virtual PC (when running WPS and if there's no response, try pressing the up and down arrow keys). The following are my recent trial summaries:

1. Booting spdos.img with gular can run SPDOS, but running WPS in it causes a system crash. I don't know if it's a unique phenomenon on my Athlon machine. (Because many friends now boot a floppy disk image with gular to run DOS.)

2. Both a DOS 7 floppy boot disk and a USB flash drive boot disk can run WPS in it. It's best not to load memory management software (referring to HIMEM, EMM386), otherwise SPDOS will occupy a large amount of memory. And if SPDOS is not loaded, the memory occupation is less (you can check with MEM). SPDOS consumes a lot of memory, and its hardware adaptability is not as good as UCDOS, so there's a reason why UCDOS took the lead later (of course, there are other reasons why UCDOS defeated SPDOS).

3. WS, WS20, WS25 are all WORDSTAR (WORDSTAR was a commonly used word processing software before WPS came out, with relatively few functions).

4. I'm more interested in word processing software under DOS, which is compact and short (only a few files, clear at a glance). The relatively good word processing software under DOS includes WPS, CCED, ED (a software included in CCDOS97, which seems not much introduced, only one file). Automatic line breaking in word processing is a very important function. Now it seems only WPS has automatic line breaking, and others need to be set manually. But making tables in WPS is really a pain.

5. Summary: The word processing software under DOS is still best with UCDOS and WPS in it (there are streamlined versions of UCDOS by Cheng Yi online, which can be downloaded and tried).
