How to use the virtual floppy IMGDRIVE tool
imgdrive is one of the earliest virtual floppy tools. It must run under DOS. Its main function is to open up an area in memory, create a virtual floppy drive, and map all operations on that floppy drive to that memory area. The specific steps are as follows:
1) Start the img program
2) Press ctrl+alt+s+d+x to activate the software (hold down CTRL and ALT, then press S, D, X in sequence)
3) In the filename area, enter the full filename of the file to be mounted, for example: c:\dos\1.img
4) Move to the drive area and you can choose one of the three virtual drive letters to create: "A B O"
5) In the format area you can choose one of hdcopy a-m and diskdupe formats. Generally, images with the extension DDI are diskdupe, while files with the extension IMG are HD-COPY floppy disk images. hdcopy a refers to floppy disk image files from early HD-COPY versions, and hd-copy m refers to image files created by later versions 1.7r and above.
6) Move to the read area and press Enter. If the message "file c:\dos\1.img error" is displayed, then either the file does not exist or the file format selected in the format area is wrong. You can go back to the format area and choose again.
7) After it is read in correctly, use dir a(b or o): to view the files in the virtual disk
8) Press the Esc key to exit, switch to the virtual disk, and you can run the installer or perform other operations.
9) If multiple disks are needed for installation, when you receive the prompt to insert disk 2, repeat step 2), reload the data, and continue the installation until it is completed.
10) When you need to exit IMGdrive, press Ctrl+Enter in its interface.
Note:
1) Sometimes there may be file format errors that cause the data to fail to load. In that case, exit first, reactivate the img tool, and try reading it again with another format.
2) When entering the image file, you need to enter the complete filename (including the path)
Compared with SIMG, IMGDRIVE is not very convenient for installing software, but IMGDRIVE also has its own strengths, especially its unique write function, which can write the modified virtual floppy file back to disk as a floppy disk image file. I used it to modify the WIN98 boot disk. It's fast and doesn't require repeatedly reading and writing floppy disks, reducing wear. It can also be used to convert between HD-COPY and diskdupe floppy disk images.
