But as soon as it gets to the step of mounting USB, it crashes. It will only boot if I delete duse.exe. Is there any other way?

Try removing the parameters after duse.exe,
but keep the duse.exe line.
See if that works.
Or download an earlier version of the moderator's boot disk and try that.
