Asking all the experts for help. My hard disk has four partitions: C, D, E, F, but after booting with a DOS boot disk, I can only see the menu content of drive D. However, my format is of the FAT type, and LASTDRIVE=Z is set. But then looking at the content of drive E is the information of the CD - ROM. I don't know why. Please give me some advice.

Same question:
Under DOS of dual system (C drive: WinXP and D drive: DOS7.1), when using DOS4USB to connect to the USB flash drive, the result is also displayed as drive E:, and entering drive E: is also a CD.
Please experts give guidance. Thanks!

I don't know what the reason is for my this problem. I really don't know where there is a mistake. I have the same problem as the second floor.

Hehe, the two upstairs, if you can't describe your own problem in detail, maybe no one will be willing to guess what your problem is. I really want to help you, but I really can't guess what you're talking about. Maybe I didn't study Chinese well.

Mr. upstairs, first of all, thank you for your kindness.

I have two active old machines with DOS_6.22 system; there are also two backup old machines (you have to be like this when using old machines, it's due to the nature of the work, there's no way around it), one of which has been changed to DOS_7.1; and a hard disk has been added to install XP, which is a dual boot, running normally. Now I need to transfer a 1.09G file from an active machine to a backup machine. There are only 3.5-inch floppy disks available between the two machines. Isn't this要命? Fortunately, there are USB ports on several machines. So I got a USB port external hard drive enclosure. Came to this DOS base camp to find drivers. As a result, I searched everywhere, almost tried everything, and even booted the super boot disk of站长 Wengier (I read all thirty-some pages of the posts). Only one package in this room: DOS4USB is a bit interesting, and my Maxtor 71084A disk was successfully connected, readable and writable. Unfortunately, this disk is only 1083MB, just a little smaller than that damn target file. Because I still have a Maxtor 91366U4, 13613MB, so I connected it, and then an error occurred. I suspect that the two machines are too old and too small, and have never seen such a "large" hard disk, so they are confused. Then I took it to that dual-system machine to connect. The loadusb.exe in DOS4USB ran smoothly, and at the end, it told me that the USB drive letter is E:. Yes, we have a dual system; C: is XP; D: is DOS; this USB is called E: in sequence, which is quite right, hurry in to have a look. As soon as I went in, I found something was wrong, it asked to insert a disc, how is it the same meaning as in the optical drive? Tinkered back and forth, tried F:, tried G:, still the same problem. There's no way, so I have to come online to ask for help again. Brother, don't dislike the wordiness, help me!

Thank you! Thank you!

Hehe, brother upstairs, first of all, thank you for the detailed introduction. It's very clear!

I think that when using USB devices under DOS, any problems should not be considered abnormal. Because DOS was originally not designed to serve USB devices.

Since your purpose is to transfer files and you also have a recognizable Maxtor 71084A disk, I think: it's really too difficult for DOS to handle USB devices. Why not use PE? Disk cloning is not too troublesome, right?

Of course, from the perspective of experimental exploration, it does seem like there's something to play with. Don't you see that so far, there are no reports of "universally compatible" USB devices under DOS.

Thanks to the elder brother upstairs:))
To be honest, I don't even know what PE is, let alone how to play with it. Just now I checked Baidu, and there is such a passage that seems a bit close:
******PE is the pre-installation environment. What it can be used for depends on what you do, what you want to do with it!
To put it simply, PE can be used to directly boot a Windows system or a Windows subsystem using a CD or even a USB flash drive. I mainly use it for maintenance. It can perform maintenance that can't be done under DOS. PE can boot a MINI Windows without a hard drive. You can customize it. It can access the local area network, dial up to the Internet, and modify system files and the registry when the system is damaged and even safe mode cannot be entered. Similar tools also include ERD and Microsoft's embedded system, etc. Microsoft's pre-installation system requires authorization. It can be generated using a foreign expert's Bart's PE, which uses the NU2 menu. Red Leaf's is of this kind. You can also use Bart's PE + XPE plug-in to make a simulated XP PE.
All functions can be customized by yourself!************
After reading it, I'm still "at a loss", unable to get started. Moreover, mine is a real "pure" DOS, with completely no relation to Windows.
Can this elder brother teach me? I'm really blank about PE. I've been checking everywhere and trying one by one, which is really too time-consuming. Anyway, thank you again for your kind reply. Although the problem hasn't been solved immediately, it has made me know that I don't need to waste time anymore. I've asked someone to help find a 1.5G Maxtor disk. This might be okay. Really thank you for your reply!

Hehe, the person above is too polite.

Personally, if it's just this one time that you need to copy files to another computer, wouldn't it be more convenient to take the hard drive off and hang it on the source file computer to copy? If you still need such operations frequently in the future, installing a PE on the computer will be much more convenient.

The so-called PE, for general users, is just like a mini XP system. After booting from this system, you can complete basic operations under the XP system. Indeed, it has nothing to do with DOS, but it can conveniently complete some operations that are difficult to do under DOS.

The installation of PE is not complicated. You just need to copy a few files to your hard drive (a certain file must be in the root directory of a certain partition), then simply run the installation program, and it's done! After restarting, you can enter the boot menu and then choose to boot the PE system.

Only a 1GB hard drive. This configuration... The memory won't be too much either. To run PE, it's better to use the normal boot.

Hehe, Senator, you must be so busy with your daily tasks that you're overworked, which has led to poor eyesight and misreading the information.... The 1G disk in the original poster's post is a USB interface device, you know.

Hard disk cloning or LAN transfer is okay, there's no need to look for a third disk, right?!

I'm quite interested in both of your questions, but your problems are likely not the same one, so it's best not to ask them together.

The description of the problem by ABCDE12345 isn't detailed enough. For example, although there are 4 partitions, how are these 4 partitions divided? Is it one primary partition and logical partitions in three extended partitions? If you start DOS with the default configuration, will E: also be a CD - ROM?

jumbogun, how is your problem going now? I see by this time you've probably disassembled the hard drive and copied the files.

Thanks, I'll explain my problem. First, my hard disk has four partitions, one is the primary partition, and the rest are extended ones, all set to FAT32. I boot into DOS from a CD. I have set LASTDRIVE=z in the batch file and can boot into DOS normally, but just can't enter drive E. But in Windows, I can enter drives E and F normally. Can't do it in DOS. Thanks for the advice.

In addition, my hard disk is relatively large, 160 GB, and each partition is 40 GB.
